Statement
My process of drawing, ie: erasing, abstracting, interpreting and reinterpreting is analogous to how memories are processed. Thoughts, moments, events are interpreted and that perception changes through time. I draw stack of rectangular blocks as well a stack of three varied cylinders, each time with disparate results. These shapes are recognizable, relatable and can stand in for collective memories. These drawings are primarily in B&W with lines that look impermanent, erased and redrawn, easily replaced. In our memories we hold specific events, images, emotions that all change and are modified with time. Some become softer and faded, some strong and definite, while others distorted and misshapen.
I interpret the drawings into sculptures. By pulling a dimensional sculpture out of a drawing it gives solidity and materiality to memories. Taking a memory and giving it volume, it takes up space, and exists in the physical world.
I continue this exercise of drawing and creating sculptures, and furthering the cycle by compressing the dimensional memories into new drawings. I am very interested in seeing this cycle continue and the interpretation each step reveals.
